As we all come to terms with the growing challenges of the COVID-19, our focus is clear; to continue to support all vision impaired persons (VIPs) needs in any way we can.
Canberra Blind Society (CBS) is still open for business, but we are taking a virtual presence rather than our usual physical one. We will continue to monitor our email account (via remote access). It is important to ensure that individuals that contact CBS for assistance are answered by a real person and so our Project Officer Glenn can be reached on his mobile 041 331 0787 if assistance is required.
We will continue to produce our monthly newsletter and disseminate to our members, and provide guidance and information on issues impacting the VIP community. CBS has been operating continuously in Canberra for 63 years and it important that it continues for the duration of the current emergency and beyond.
The safety and wellbeing of our members and volunteers is our priority. With this in mind, we’re following the advice of ACT Chief Minister, Medical Officer and State Government authorities by suspending all face to face peer lead activities including Braille and cooking classes until further notice. Note, that the Book Club and Seniors lunches have already been cancelled.
While we are in lockdown at present, we will be working on our Retail Outlet and Outreach Officer position who will be employed to service our current and new members in a range of individual needs. We wish to be well positioned to resume our normal activities once the temporary restrictions imposed by the ACT Government are lifted.
The current restrictions will allow us to spend more time contacting our current membership base to see whether they require our services and also ascertain information on what services they would like CBS to provide in the future, once things return to normal.
